Some might look at my food logs for the October 2008 Eat Local Challenge and think, “How boring” or “I wouldn’t want to do that if I have to eat nearly the same thing every day.” I assure you, the repetition is my fault–I am a creature of habit. It is not for lack of variety in this region at this time of year.
When I used to eat food from away or out there, I did the same thing. I would eat yogurt from Dannon and apples from New Zealand. I would order the same turkey sandwich from the deli every day at lunch. Dinner always depended on the same factors: after work meetings, remembering to defrost something, and ambition at the end of the work day.
A lot of our bounty is getting preserved these days, so our meals have the potential of becoming more interesting come the winter when we break into our stores.
I do eat an egg every day now whereas I didn’t in the past. The difference now is that these eggs are organic, free-range, and hormone and antibiotic free. I could even eat two a day now, but that would be doubly repetitious.
So, if you’re thinking of doing this and the only thing holding you back is variety, please don’t go by my menu!
