I’m off from the day job this week and have had an opportunity to frequent some of the Farmers Markets I’d ordinarily miss.
Tuesday’s Sandy Hook Organic market is still going strong. My favorite farms are still there: Waldingfield Farm, Shortts Farm, Middle Brook Farm, and Stoneledge among others. They are back at the location behind St. John’s Episcopal Church after a brief try at the Lexington Gardens location (they needed more parking). It seems the town of Newtown couldn’t find it in their zoning hearts to have a Farmers Market in town. Gee folks—we have five farms in the town that I know of and you can’t even give them a space to sell their goods?! And yet it’s a town priority to spend our tax revenues purchasing land to save as open spaces. As if working farms weren’t open spaces! Wake up and smell the local food, guys. Heads up: Patrick Horan of Waldingfield says they’ll have tomatoes in September!
Wednesday’s Woodbury market is new for me. Lots and lots of vendors. There was Wild Carrot Farm—I was impressed with their huge selection, all local, all organic! Also there was Averill Farm, with their divine apple cider donuts (made with their own cider). I can’t recall all of the vendors and regret not having my notebook—it was a spur of the moment thing. The Woodbury Market is located in Hollow Park and is open from 3-6 PM.
I sure wish these midweek markets would stay open later so that I could get there after work. Perhaps until 7 PM. I realize you folks have families and dinner tables of your own to tend to, but whaddya say guys?

I’m with you! I’d love to visit some of the other markets, but they are all closed before I get out of work, and open too late for me to get there before. Wild Carrot Farm sounds like a great find.
