Late Bloomers Farm

Saturday’s Forage: 09-12-2009

Here’s the bounty:

Here’s the itinerary:

  • Cherry grove Farm, Newtown, CT: jalapeno and Hungarian peppers.
  • Blue Jay Orchards: Cortland apples and apple cider.
  • Bethel Farmers Market:
    • Don Taylor Farms: peaches and watermelons.
    • Newtown Cedar Hill Farm: broccoli, onions and parsley.
    • Maple Bank Farm: plums, red peppers, and plum tomatoes.
  • Holbrook Farm: Maxixe (a cucumber-like vegetable), Jilo (pronounced Zee-lo, an eggplant-like vegetable), Stone Wall Dairy raw milk, potatoes, garlic, thyme, and a whole fresh chicken from Kandew Acres in Roxbury. (When I say whole, I mean it—head, neck and feet—all intact). The Maxixe and Jilo are Brazilian vegetables and I’m looking forward to seeing what I can make with them.
  • New Morning Natural Foods: Foxfire raw milk and Wave Hill Bread
  • Artisan Food Store: Bridgid’s Abbey, Womanchego, and Vivace Bambino cheeses from Cato Corner Farm and North Fork sweet and regular potato chips.
Sally, the proprietor, has a wealth of knowledge about various cheeses in this area as well as from other small farms in the country and even the world. She is also quite savvy about wines (being a Certified Sommelier) and freely shares her knowledge. Feel free to tap her for pairing suggestions. This shop was a terrific find!

Time to get busy!

I made a beginning on putting by. I am not nearly as industrious as some of my contemporaries, but still I am exhausted!

  • onions → chopped, vacu-sealed, and frozen
  • plums → dehydrated
  • cilantro → ice cubes
  • jalapeno peppers → roasted, vacu-sealed, and frozen
  • sweet red peppers → roasted, vacu-sealed, and frozen
  • chicken → cut into parts, some cooked and some of that eaten and some of that vacu-sealed and frozen/others parts vacu-sealed and frozen to cook another day
  • tomatoes → skinned, cooked down to a puree, vacu-sealed, and frozen

Is it break time yet? No!!

Interesting finds from Holbrook Farm – and I’ll have to get to Bethel’s market for some watermelon if I can. Do you know who grows it?
I still have way (way) too many peppers, I think I’ll try your method of roasting them before vacu-sealing. Do you take off the skin before sealing them?

Cannot wait to hear more about the cucumber-like vegetable. I love cukes . . . and I am curious about their kin!!
