I’m really looking forward to the Third Annual Dark Days Eat Local Challenge 09/10. Perhaps I’ll get more adventurous. Perhaps I’ll just continue to stay connected to the locavore community. Perhaps something in between.
Nonetheless, my first post is a simple favorite: Chicken Scarpariella. Perhaps you recall, I made this for the One Local Summer Challenge and continue to refine the recipe to achieve the level of Pizza Station in Chappaqua, NY or Sal e Pepe in Newtown, CT.
- chicken thighs from Greyledge Farm, Bridgewater, CT
- hot cherry peppers from Maple Bank Farm, Roxbury, CT, pickled by me
- garlic from Cherry Grove Farm, Newtown, CT.
- pan roasted white and blue potatoes, from my own Late Bloomers Farm
- spinach (sauteed with garlic and olive oil) from from Fort Hill Farm, via New Morning
- oil, beef broth, salt and pepper from the big world
I pan-roasted the potatoes after sautéing the hot peppers and garlic in the same pan, so there was some nice heat in them (for those who like that kind of thing, like me).
As for the beverage, Marechal Foch from Jerram Winery.

I’m excited for the Dark Days Challenge this year too
Blue potatoes – those sound interesting. I’ve eaten purple, yellow, red, tan, even one that was kind of black, but I’ve never seen blue. How do they taste? Pickled hot cherry peppers, yum.

[...] Chicken scarpariella was on the menu at Sophie’s house. She’s in the process of perfecting this dish made with chicken thighs and served it with pan roasted potatoes, hot cherry peppers and sauteed spinach. Mmmm. [...]
