I love Thanksgiving! A couple of years ago, an acquaintance said, “I hope the meaning of the holiday doesn’t get lost behind the food.” Sorry–I think the food is the meaning of the holiday. I love having a holiday that celebrates human skill at coaxing food from the soil. For me, Thanksgiving is a holiday [...]

Escarole, the other leafy green
Sport Hill Farm has escarole! Escarole (that’s ‘scarole, in Bronx Italian) is a favorite of mine from childhood. Escarole is a broad, curly-leaf endive, high in vitamin A, iron, and potassium. For the past few years, I’ve been getting mine over the border since escarole is not as popular a vegetable here in CT as [...]

The 2010 Summer Farmers Market season is starting to swing! Several markets are already opening, and within the next month, the rest will follow suit. Here’s a directory of sorts, highlighting the markets in my near circle, far circle, and some links to more market information so you can draw your own circles. I also [...]

Saturday’s Forage, 5/1/2010
This week’s forage took me to Holbrook Farm, where I scored: spinach mustard greens scallions raw goat’s milk from Beltane. (Yes! Holbrook carries raw goats milk!. Tastes like, um, milk.) cheeses from Cato Corner Farm and Sprout Creek Farm. This one, with a tangy brie-meets-light-blue-cheese kind of taste, had my name all over it. DiGrazia [...]
Firsts of the Season
I finally had my first fiddleheads of the season at New Morning Natural Foods. These are from the Ostrich Fern. Fiddleheads are a New England thing. I’m fairly new to them, my first try was two years ago from Chef Corey at Trinity Conference Center in Cornwall Bridge. Since then, I haven’t missed a season. [...]
Earth Day at New Morning in Woodbury
I knew it was going to be big, but I didn’t imagine it would be this huge! There were oodles of vendors offering free samples and not-for-profit organizations offering information. WPKN was live broadcasting the event up until a little after 1 PM. You couldn’t have asked for a nicer day!
Happy Earth Day!
The first Earth Day was 40 years ago! (Where’d the time go?) The point of the day is to raise our environmental awareness. I have to admit, there’s a lot more of that now than there was 40 years ago. Could we be doing more? Certainly. We need to care for this planet because if [...]
