This week’s forage took me to
Holbrook Farm, where I scored:
spinach
mustard greens
scallions
raw goat’s milk from Beltane. (Yes! Holbrook carries raw goats milk!. Tastes like, um, milk.)
cheeses from Cato Corner Farm and Sprout Creek Farm. This one, with a tangy brie-meets-light-blue-cheese kind of taste, had my name all over it.
DiGrazia Vineyards, where I picked up the [...]

I finally had my first fiddleheads of the season at New Morning Natural Foods. These are from the Ostrich Fern. Fiddleheads are a New England thing. I’m fairly new to them, my first try was two years ago from Chef Corey at Trinity Conference Center in Cornwall Bridge. Since then, I haven’t missed a season.
To [...]

I knew it was going to be big, but I didn’t imagine it would be this huge!
There were oodles of vendors offering free samples and not-for-profit organizations offering information.
WPKN was live broadcasting the event up until a little after 1 PM.
You couldn’t have asked for a nicer day!

I went to Meet the Author, David Gumpert at Molten Java in Bethel. Gumpert wrote The Raw Milk Revolution: Behind America’s Emerging Battle Over Food Rights. Not a bad crowd for 6 PM on a Wednesday—farmers, consumers, raw milk advocates, bloggers, journalists, locavores, children, and avid readers. David Gumpert was warmly introduced by Ed Hertz [...]

This week’s forage was a short loop- Holbrook Farm and New Morning Natural Foods with an excursion to Rich Farm.
At Holbrook’s, a cheese tasting was in-progress. They’re carrying a larger selection of cheeses, including Cato Corner, Beltane, and Sprout Creek Farm from local sources, and the tasting was an opportunity to introduce their customers to [...]

Time is just flying and all sorts of things are popping up now, particularly with this unseasonably mild weather!
I’ve got some garlic coming up:
I planted cloves from garlic I got from Maple Bank, Hollbrook, and Cherry Grove.
I planted some potatoes. I read an article that said this was a good method. I’ll let you know!
I [...]

This week’s Dark Days Eat Local Challenge meal, being the last meal of the challenge, was for Julia (& Zoe): Boeuf Bourguignon, served over homemade spelt egg noodles with sautéed spinach on the side.
Sorry about the picture…we’d already started the meal when I remembered!
This is another dish prepared in the cassoulet, beginning on the stove [...]

This week’s Dark Days Eat Local Challenge meal was a tribute to the unseasonably warm weather: grilled ribeye steak with sauteéd spinach, pan-fried butternut squash, and a salad with crumbled bacon and hard-cooked eggs.
Here are my sources:
ribeye steak from Greyledge Farm
butternut squash from Riverbank Farm
spinach from Fort Hill Farm via New Morning Natural Foods
red leaf [...]

This week’s Dark Days Eat Local Challenge meal was provided nearly entirely by Wild Hive Bakery & Café: Ravioli with a Creme Fraiche sauce.
The ravioli were homemade by Wild Hive using:
their own spelt flour
eggs from their own chickens
cheese from Ronny Brook
apple from Fishkill Farms
parsnips from Four Winds Farm
salt and pepper from away
I tossed the cooked [...]

Redeeming my own birthday gift from Phillis, I drove up to Albany to see my two favorite musicians (one local, one not). About an hour into the drive, I came upon the adorable hamlet of Clinton Corners, NY. Despite the regional transformation from agricultural to residential, the area still has an agricultural bent to it. [...]
