Apple Pie

A traditional favorite, particularly with the crumb topping.

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F.
  2. Make a pie crust. (See Pie Shell, Butter.)
  3. In a large bowl, combine:

peeled and thinly sliced apples (Northern Spies are a new favorite but Ida Reds also make an exccellent pie.)
(6 small to medium-sized apples)

sugar

T
flour
3/4
t
cinnamon
1/4
t
salt
1/8
t
nutmeg
1
T
orange juice

  1. Spoon the filling into the pie crust.3
  2. Top with either Pie Shell Topping or Crumb Topping.

Pie Shell Topping

  1. Place the second pie shell over the filling.
  2. Fold the edge of the top crust under the bottom crust and flute around the edge.
  3. Cut slits in several places on the top (or get creatively decorative).
  4. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until crust is golden brown.

Crumb Topping

  1. Mix together until crumbly:

brown sugar
1-1/2

cinnamon

  1. Crumble crumbs on top of pie.
  2. Cover with aluminum foil and bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes.
  3. Remove foil and bake an additional 25 to 30 minutes.
  4. Cool and optionally dust with:
