Last week I went foraging (for real—in the fields and woods looking for wild edibles). I learned that this weed that grows on my lawn is called Field Garlic or Onion Grass and is edible. So I picked some to use in a dinner.
The taste is similar to onion or garlic, but really mild. I decided to use them like chives on my potatoes. Since the taste is so mild, it takes quite a bit. (More than is shown in the picture. Much more.)
Here’s the whole meal.
While it’s not part of any challenge, here’s the origin information:
- beef ribeye steak from Stuarts Family Farm
- mixed greens from Holbrook Farm
- potatoes from Riverbank Farm with Field Garlic from my back yard
- Cabin Fever beer from the Birkshire Brewing Company
Happy Holidays, for those celebrating holidays this week..

I love the young spring garlic shoots, but have never had it wild. So it was just growing randomly on your lawn? That’s really interesting how things take root.

Hi Mango: Funny, because in previous years it used to annoy me! (You can also see it growing by the side of the road.)

I’ll keep my eyes open for it - wonder if I’ve walked past it a billion times without even knowing?
