Saturday’s Forage 1/31/09

Today’s forage was simply the Wholesome Wave winter market in Fairfield. I’d already stopped by Silverman’s Farm for apples and cider earlier in the week. By the way, Silverman’s is out of their own Cortlands are providing them from a farm in Wallingford.

I scored:

  • Yogurt from the Smyth Family’s Trinity Farm in Enfield. Since someone asked, their cows are Holsteins and are raised naturally, in this case meaning, like organic, but not certified.
  • French country bread from Wave Hill Breads. Wave Hill added a few new products to their portfolio. They now have crust chips, plain and flavored and small round loaves that make perfect bowls for hearty soups and stews.
  • Carrots and potatoes from Riverbank Farm.
  • Sheep and cow cheese from Sankow’s Beaver Brook.
  • Heart-shaped soaps from Goatboy Soap.
  • NY style pretzels from Sono Bakery.
  • eggs and chicken legs and thighs from Ox Hollow Farm.
  • Kale and Swiss chard bouquets from Two Guys from Woodbridge.

The pretzels pair well with Beaver Brook’s sheep cheese. The Wave Hill Bread pairs well with Trinity’s butter. In fact, Trinity’s butter is as good as you can get without making it yourself!

  1. I’m so sorry to have missed you this weekend at the market! I saw your comment, but had guests so couldn’t make it down there. Looks like a good haul of food you found though. Riverbank seems to be doing a great job with the veg through the winter – I haven’t seen carrots at the other markets. Have you heard that Trinity is going to start making cottage cheese? I am so excited for that!

  2. Mangochild: It occurred to me last week that you and I frequent the same farms and markets (about 80%) and that it wass strange that we haven’t run into each other.
I didn’t hear about Trinity and cottage cheese…do you suppose we could get them to make ice cream? The two places I go to close for the winter.
