One Local Summer 2009, Week #10

This week’s One Local Summer Challenge meal was:

ols_wk10

  • oven-roasted chicken: chicken from McEnroe, shallots from Don Taylor, fresh thyme, sage, rosemary, and garlic from my yard (hee hee), my chicken broth, and Coyote white wine from McLaughlin Vineyards
  • pan-roasted cranberry potatoes, from Maple Bank Farm
  • sautéed broccoli with garlic: broccoli from Holbrook Farm, garlic from Missy’s
  • olive oil, salt, and pepper from the world

I had to cook this chicken—it’s been in my freezer a long, long time (hint: it was about to celebrate a birthday). It held up surprisingly well. It was moist and tender and you’d have thought it was fresh. It was organic—I don’t know if that had anything to do with it. It was also super vacuum-sealed, which probably had more to do with it.

It was also anatomically correct (breast-to-thigh size proportions). Worked out well for me since I prefer dark meat!

If you ever get a chance, the trip to Millerton, NY is worth the drive; it’s an adorable town. Locavore shopping at McEnroe’s is like fishing in a barrel.

  1. Sophie, I used to think a potato was a potato … until I tried some of those cranberry potatoes and the beautiful blue potatoes. What a difference local makes for flavor. Your dinner looks delish.
