Saturday’s Forage, 12/20/2009

This week’s forage was a return to the usual haunts.

Beginning at the Fairfield Winter Market, which is still outside due to the roof work on the theater, I scored:

It was pretty darn cold (and again snow was threatening). The Fairfield Winter Market will be closed for the next two Saturdays (holiday weekends) and they’ll be back on January 9, hopefully indoors!

Then on to Holbrook Farm, where something is always cooking! I scored: Holbrook’s own broccoli and kale (which I stole right out of Lynne’s cold hands moments after she picked it), Stone Wall Dairy raw milk, yogurt made for Holbrooks from Arethusa milk, more cayennes for drying, apples and pears from Blue Hill in Wallingford, some Goatboy Soap, Johnny Cake white corn meal from Kenyon’s in Rhode Island, and garlic from Warrups.

Then on to Maple Bank Farm in Roxbury where I scored LOTS of potatoes that were harvested on December 2–apparently there was a stretch of garden that was inadvertently overlooked at the traditional harvest time! I also picked up a few more butternut squashes since you can never have enough of these on hand. This week is the end of the season for the Maple Bank Farm Stand until the spring.

Finally to New Morning, where the holiday action was buzzing. Among many items, I scored these local items: more Stone Wall Dairy raw milk and eggs from J&L Eggery in Southbury.
